This book aims to give a general survey on the main results obtained in the National Research Project (PRIN 2006) on tunnel linings “Optimization of the Structural, Technological and Functional Performance of Construction Methodologies and Materials in Tunnel Linings” (PRIN 2006), financed by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MIUR).
The book summarizes the main aspects arose during the development of the research project. The goals achieved concern the determination of new design solutions for conventional and segmental tunnel linings by properly considering the soil-structure interaction, the improvement of technological aspects in order to reduce the construction time and the local damages that often occur in precast segments used in mechanized tunnels, the reduction of the amount of conventional reinforcement (to reduce costs and to speed-up the construction) by using innovative materials (Fiber Reinforced Concrete, FRC and Self Compacting Concrete, SCC), the enhancement of durability and of fire resistance of tunnel linings, the enhancement of the numerical modeling and, last but not least, the job-site safety during tunnel operations.
